UNHCR’s overall objective in Malta is to advocate for access to protection on appropriate terms and promote durable solutions for all persons of concern (asylum-seekers, holders of refugee status, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, and stateless individuals).

UNHCR Malta is not an operational office, meaning that UNHCR does not provide services or material support to refugees and asylum-seekers directly (as UNHCR would do in camp settings, for example). UNHCR mainly works with partners to deliver services. Therefore, should UNHCR, through its outreach and activities, identify, encounter or is approached by a person of concern disclosing a gender-based violence (GBV) incident, they would be referred to our partners.  UNHCR’s main partner in Malta is JRS Malta. UNHCR’s project with JRS, ‘Project Integrated’, provides psychological, psychosocial, and legal support to survivors of GBV. JRS offer psychologicalsupport/counselling services (supported by cultural mediators providing interpretation) as well as psychosocial support through activities for women residing in open centres, namely activities to create spaces where the women can build relationships of trust, build social networks, and learn about their rights and about the services available for survivors of GBV and how to access them. Through ‘Project Integrated’, sub-contracted partner Women’s Rights Foundation provide legal services and financial support to cover legal costs and court fees for GBV survivors.

Office hours are 09:00 – 17:00. However, one should contact UNHCR in advance as UNHCR does not have drop-in hours.
